Greatman's Bay, very
close
to Carraroe , in Connemeara Co. Galway,
provides a couple of very nice sheltered, shore dives. To access
the dives go to a little harbour called 'Ceibh An Doilin'.
Take the R336 from Galway, and approximately one mile south of
Carraroe,
take the right turn marked 'An Bothar bui'. Follow the boreen to
the end and you will arrive at a little harbour (Ceibh An Doilin).
This is a sheltered site diveable in most conditions. Apart from slack
water (Galway), there is always some tidal current, which can be quite
strong around mid-tide.

The Dives
Ceibh An
Doilín (Deep End)
Parallel
to
the
shore,
opposite
the
harbour,
there
are
three
reefs running approximately north/south. The maximum depth
here on the outside reef is eighteen metres at high tide. There
are plenty of rocks and crevices to explore, with a great
variety of fish. Often seen here are lobster, brown crabs, pollack,
wrasse, rays, dogfish, and various flatfish. The tide can be strong
at times, especially on the ebb. Navigation is easy as the exit
point can be anywhere along the shore.
Trá
An
Doilín
(The
Coral
Beach)
Two
miles
south
of
Carraroe,
there
is
an
area
known as 'The Coral
Beach'. The water can be entered at either end of the beach, depending
on the tide. Maximum depth here is about seven metres. This is
an ideal site for training dives. There's usually lot of life to be
seen and entries/exits are easy.
