Many thanks to Rory and Oisin for organising a great weekend in Baltimore. With the bad weather all last week, they did especially well in getting two fine days. On Saturday morning at 7.00am, there was not a puff of wind, nor a ripple on the sea. Baltimore Watersports (John Kearney), provided the services, comfortable accommodation and a suberb boat, 'Jacqueline M'. The boat was fast, smooth and spacious. We set out at 9.45am on Saturday for the 'Glandore Sub', the U260, http://www.scubaireland.com/u260.html . With a calm sea and blue sky John placed the shot line to within two meters of the conning tower on the sub. The sub was an awesome sight, looming from the depths as we reached the 35M mark. There was just enough time to take in the entire wreck, including looking down the periscope, and peering through the hatch. (There's not enough room for a diver and equipment to squeeze through). After lunch in Baltimore, we went to the Kowloon Bridge. The shot was dropped in the cargo hold, near the bow. The viz was good and the wreck was teeming with fish. The KB is so big, it's hard to figure out exactly what part you are at, most divers just wandered about, taking in the view, and watching the many fish, who seemed oblivious to the divers. The dive on Sunday morning was again on the Kowloon Bridge. This time the shot was dropped nearer the bow, and the dive surpassed even the previous day. We were able to take in the massive size of the bow, from 35M at the bottom to 4.5M at the tip of the bow. Inside this there were massive chambers, going horizontal and vertical. Again, the amount, size and variety of fish was amazing. The second dive on Sunday was a scenic, easygoing dive at Gascanane Sound, between Cape Clear and Sherkin Island. |
